If you aren’t a political news junkie and you don’t live in or around Delaware you have probably never heard of John Atkins.    Rep. Atkins was currently serving office.  He was driving in Maryland….  and here are just some important snippets so you can fill in the blanks:

…The radar clocked the vehicle going 52mph in a 40mph zone…I observed the vehicle crossing the left and center lanes as well…I observed a dark colored Chevrolet bearing Delaware registration Representative tags JCA. (link)

…Atkins had his license and another card in his hand available when he put down the window. I observed a Delaware license belonging to Atkins, as well as a laminated card that stated Atkins was a Delaware State Representative. (link)

I could smell the odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from Atkins person…I observed multiple empty bottles of beer, an alcoholic beverage, on the floor of the vehicle behind the driver’s seat…

I noted that his eyes were glassy and bloodshot. I noted that his speech however was not slurred or choppy. (link)

PFC Smith stated that he would initiate a Preliminary Breath Test (PBT) test on Atkins to see if he was ok to drive. Atkins agreed to take the PBT and we stepped onto the sidewalk and PFC initiated the PBT on Atkins. Atkins blew into the PBT and it registered a .14 and PFC Smith immediately stated that Atkins was not ok to drive. (link)

Atkins stated immediately that he could get a Delaware State Trooper to come pick him up…Atkins stated that he had a friend coming to get him, the friend lived or was in Fenwick and was on his way to 123rd street at that time. (link)

Well let me fill in the rest of the blanks here. After a lot of pressure (and the fact that it was about to be forced on him anyway), a tearful Atkins resigns his post.  This was just a couple weeks ago.

Guess who is trying to get re-elected in the special election to replace him?  I think you can figure it out
