Darwin Political Awards to Howard Dean and Rep, Katharine Harris

U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris’ campaign has called for an apology from Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean.

“Howard Dean’s extreme comments reflect a lack of understanding and basic decency,” Stanley Tate, finance chairman for the Friends of Katherine Harris campaign, said in a statement.

“It is inappropriate to engage in partisan mudslinging against a woman who has a proven record of advocating for the interests of Floridians and for supporting noble humanitarian causes worldwide,” he said.

Dean called Harris, a Republican from Longboat Key, a “crook” during lunchtime remarks Wednesday to the Democratic Professionals Forum in West Palm Beach.

“Thank God for Bill Nelson, because we’d have another crook in the United States Senate if weren’t for him,” Dean said. “He’s going to beat the pants off Katherine Harris, who didn’t understand that it is ethically improper to be the chairman of the campaign and count the votes at the same time. This is not Russia. And she is not Stalin.”

The Harris campaign’s statement noted that while Joseph Stalin was “best known for the genocidal slaughter of millions of his own countrymen,” Harris is a “well-known champion of human rights, seeking to eradicate crimes involving child exploitation and human-trafficking by sponsoring legislation that would impose harsher sentences and financial penalties on people who engage in such activities.”

Tate did not comment on Harris’ role during the 2000 presidential election recount, but said her “composure during times of need, as well as her commitment to abiding by Florida law and service to its citizens, is unparalleled. Unfounded attacks on her character appear to be the Democratic strategy for defeating the woman who has their candidate (running) scared like a jack rabbit.”

DNC spokesman Luis Miranda said Harris was “trying to deflect attention from her failing campaign and blunders,” and that Dean “won’t dignify” Harris’ request with a response.

“Katherine Harris has lost all credibility. People are tired of the deceit, divisiveness and distortion of Katherine Harris and the GOP who put the interests of their political party ahead of the interests of our country,” Miranda said.

Howard Dean the Democratic National Committee Chairman wins his Darwin Political Award for opening his mouth.  Howard Dean will be a repeat winner of the Darwin Political Award and may be this years Darwin Political Idiot of the Year.
